Govt Spends Rp 82 Billion to Build Seawall on Kelapa Island

Local residents appreciate the construction of the seawall on the northern side of Kelapa Island, Kelapa Island Urban Village, North Seribu Islands. So far, progress has reached 20 percent.

This work spends Rp 82.48 billion

One of the residents from RW 03, Kelapa Island, Nurmakiah (48) stated, the seawall is very important to reduce the potential for coastal erosion and also to protect against tidal flooding or called rob.

"We thank the government for quickly responding to our proposal. Now we feel more protected," he expressed, Monday (8/4).

The work above received appreciation from the Kelapa Island Urban Village Head, Muslim.

"Locals need this seawall and it is also an aspiration conveyed during the Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbang) 2023," he explained.

He added, efforts to protect the land area are also carried out by intensifying mangrove planting.

"This seawall will also have a positive impact on the tourism sector on Kelapa Island," he asserted.

Seribu Island SDA Sub-agency Head, Mustajab explained, the seawall on the northern side of Kelapa Island was constructed with a length of approximately 830 meters.

"The current work has reached more than 160 meters or 20 percent. We'll keep monitoring its progress to ensure it is completed according to the target," he added.

He assessed, the seawall would later be connected to two access points as a ring road.

"We plan to built a small bridge at the back of the seawall, allowing boats or ships owned by residents to pass through. Hence, residents who work as fishermen can also do their activities more easily," he added.

He added, another seawall was also slated to be built on Tidung and Lancang islands.

"This work spends Rp 82.48 billion," he stated.

He also urged locals to help care for and maintain the dam, especially its cleanliness.

"Hopefully, the waters around the dam remain clean. This is our responsibility," he asserted.
